What is the Undermountain Parent Teacher Organization?
UME PTO’s goals are 1) to provide an opportunity for parents, school administrators, teachers, and staff to communicate and exchange ideas to benefit our children 2) to promote a positive, collaborative, on-going relationship between students, administration, parents, teachers, and staff to help enrich the education of Undermountain Elementary’s students; 3) To provide funding, supplies, volunteers, and sponsorship for various school-related activities.
Who is the PTO?
Any parent, teacher, administrator or staff is welcome to be part of the PTO. There is no requirement and there are not dues for membership. Everyone is welcome!
What does the PTO fund?
Enrichment programs like Birds of Prey. Class field trips to places like Plymouth Plantation, Boston Science Museum and Nature’s Classroom. Library books and other school-related activities. We also sponsor community events for little to no cost to our school community such as "Trunk or Treat" and "Family Fitness Night".
Why do you do so many fundraisers?
We understand that you’re being asked to sell and fundraise for many of your children’s school and extracurricular activities. Unfortunately schools do not have the budget to fund field trips and enrichment programs. Much of the funding is left to organizations like the PTO. Fundraising is necessary in today’s climate of budget cuts from the Federal, state and local levels. Keep in mind that other groups (sports, chorus, band, theater) all must do fundraising as well. Each group is equally in need of funds in order to provide our children opportunities to find their strengths and excel.
Why do fundraisers for gift wrap, cookie dough, etc? Why not do other types of fundraising?
The gift wrap fundraiser brings in a large profit for our school every year. This and the other fundraisers PTO participates in require minimal overhead. It’s a simple way to raise much needed funds. If you have any ideas, please share them. We welcome ALL suggestions!
I’m not comfortable asking my friends and relatives to buy stuff. I’d be much more willing to write a check, so why not ask for a flat donation?
Any voluntary donation is certainly welcomed. You may send a donation payable to UME PTO to Undermountain Elementary, P.O. Box 339, Sheffield, MA 01257.
What are the benefits of being involved in UME PTO?
Being involved is a great way to make new friends and to learn more about what goes on in the lives of your kids during the school day. We encourage parents to donate some time to Undermountain Elementary. Our involvement emphasizes the importance of school and community to our students and demonstrates our investment in their education and extracurricular activities.
